    Question

Without an ignition timing controller (such as J&S or MSD units), what is a safe ignition timing setting?

Would 14degrees be good enough so that I don't knock ping on a hot day? Or should it be even lower?

The average I have seen on a GSR with no additional electronic units would be 10 degrees...also the instructions for the JRSC specify 10 degrees

Start your timing at 10 degrees advanced... then go up in increments of 2 degrees. Test drive after each adjustment. If you hear any ping or detonation, then retard back 2 degrees.

hey dude, when we do the install I am going to set it to 8 degrees. If you want to raise it 'll let you handle that. I had mine at 8 and it was very safe. no detonation. Especially if all the station really do go to 91 octane as the rumors say.

btw, you'll love this board. It is a wealth of info

    I remember seeing
    92 octane=8 BTDC
    93 octane=10 BTDC

Keep it at 8 BTDC since Cali is 91-92 octane soon to be 91 octane.

If you really wanna be safe get the Jackson Racing BTC, it will give you the most bang for the buck and allow you to have your stock timing.

I just went to the ITR expo this last weekend and did about 40-50laps (which wore out my brake pads and tires) with my timing at 18 degrees, the JR BTC, JR MAP controller, JR VPAC set to engage vtec at 2500 rpm and water injection, and there was no ping even with 91 octane gas. If you want proof that the JR stuff works this is it. After racing i drove the 700 miles back to Tucson and the car is still running great.

Track driving is the hardest driving you can do on a car....6000-9000 rpm the whole time. I got it up to 115 and then back down to 40 in just a few ceconds then back up to 100
